Gear steel is the general name of steel used for gear manufacturing. Gear is one of the most commonly used mechanical components which is widely used in mechanical transmission device. There are many kinds of gears like: spur gear, chain gear, timing belt pulley, helical gear, internal gear, rack, straight bevel gear, curved bevel gear, zero bevel gear, staggered screw gear, worm gear and so on.


Gear steel is a key material with high requirements in the use of special alloy steel in automobiles, railways, ships and construction machinery. Gear material requires strong bending fatigue strength and contact fatigue strength, the tooth surface should have enough hardness and wear resistance and the core should have certain strength and toughness. Gears are generally made of forged steel, except for those that are too large in size (da > 400~600mm) or are suitable for foundry with complex structure and shape.

 

Carbon steel or alloy steel with carbon content of 0.15 ~ 0.6% is commonly used for gear applications. The microalloying elements in gear steel can improve the toughness, impact resistance, wear resistance and adhesion resistance of the material, and the mechanical properties of the material can also be improved by heat treatment or chemical heat treatment. The alloy gear steel is generally ncluding low carbon alloy steel such as: 15CrMo, 20Cr, etc and medium carbon alloy steel: 40Cr, 42CrMo, 35CrMo, etc.

 

15CrMo

Carburized surface hardening treatment, generally used to pay attention to the strength and toughness of the parts or parts that need to bear a lot of friction, such as cylinder piston, spindle, gear, bolt, shaft and so on. For the manufacture of section <30mm under high speed, medium or heavy load, impact and friction of important parts; Such as: gear, gear ring, gear shaft cross head.

In the automotive industry, the section used is less than 30mm; Important carburized parts bearing high speed or heavy load and impact; Such as gear. Shaft. Gear ring. Gear shaft. Sliding bearing spindle, Crosshead, Claw clutch, Worm, etc.


25CrMo4

25CrMo4 (ASTM 4118) alloy structural steel has high hardenability, no tempering brittleness, good weldability, little tendency to form cold crack, good machinability and cold strain plasticity.

25 CrMo4 gear steel in general conditioning or carburizing and quenching condition, used in the manufacture of the corrosive medium and working temperature below 250 ℃, the medium containing hydrogen nitrogen mixture work of high pressure pipe and all kinds of fasteners, more senior carburized parts and used in the manufacture of automobile gear, all kinds of special wear-resistant parts such as plane, shaft, high pressure pipe and all kinds of fasteners, etc.


42CrMo4

42CrMo4(ASTM 4140) is a kind of medium carbon-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. The chromium content provides good hardness permeability, and the molybdenum element gives hardness uniformity and high strength. The alloy balanced the strength, toughness and wear resistance well. It has the following advantages: stable composition, low harmful elements, high steel purity, small decarbonization layer, less surface defects, etc., and is easy to process under heat treatment conditions, with good ductility and resistance to high temperature stress. This material is widely used in the production of high strength steel fasteners, such as engine, mold, motor, gear, transmission parts, shaft, gear, arm, cold forging parts, screw products.

 

In addition, the specification like ASTM 4320, 4340,8615, 8617, 8620, 8622,9840 can be used for gear purposes. As a common alloy carburizing steel and bearing steel, They are mainly used as automotive bearings, transmission shafts, gears, screws, tool parts and other impact resistant, wear-resistant parts of the material. The surface after carburizing treatmenthas a fairly high hardness, wear resistance and contact fatigue strength, while the core still retains a good toughness, can withstand high impact load.
