How to calculate Seamless steel Pipe Working Pressure

Known the out diameter and wall thickness of SEAM pipe,How to work out the Seamless steel Pipe Working Pressure.

Equation: P = (2*S*T)/(OD.*SF)

Where: P = Fluid Pressure (psi)

T = Pipe Wall Thickness (in)

OD. = Pipe Outside Diameter (in)

SF = Safety factor (General Calculations 1.5 – 10, Use 1 For Bursting Pressure)

S =  Material Strength (psi)

Ultimate Tensile strength or Yield strength can be used.

Ultimate should be used to determine the bursting pressure.

Yield can be used for estimating pressures at which permanent deformation begins.


When P<7Mpa ,SF=8        

when 7<P<17.5, SF=6       

When P>17.5, SF=4  


ASTM A106 seamless pipe for example,carbon steel pipeφ48*6(SF=6,S=410MPa).P= (2*S*T)/(O.D.*SF)=(2*410*6)/(6*48)=17.083MPa
